Kitesurfing Mauritius: The Attitude Freeride League 2014

attitude freeride league

We’ve written before about the perfect wind and water conditions in Mauritius for kiters and windsurfers, but it bears repeating that the island is globally renowned as one of the world’s most outstanding locations for these increasingly popular sports.

In partnership with the Attitude Hotel Group and following on from the inaugural event last year, this year’s Attitude Freeride League takes place from June to November, with the Attitude Group the main sponsor of the Championship for the next three years. The full programme consists of five national races and four international races, with the next major event – the Attitude Freeride Challenge – taking place in August 2014.

The Attitude Freeride Challenge

The Attitude Freeride Challenge – an Indian Ocean Windsurfing & Kitesurfing Championship – will see international teams of kiters and windsurfers compete against each other. This year’s event will welcome teams from Reunion, Seychelles, South Africa, Australia and France, but the eventual goal is to welcome windsurfing and kitesurfing teams from all over the world.

Four races are on the schedule for this year, with small variations on the route to ensure the launch of both kite and windsurfers on the same starting line. Long distances will be covered, at some of the most beautiful surfing spots on the island.

The first event is the Malibu Classic, an intense and epic slalom race held at Le Morne in front of hundreds of spectators and enthusiasts. The second, longest, and most challenging race, the Heineken Crossing, starts at the Preskil Beach Resort and runs 20km to Ile aux Cerf, and 20km back to the starting point.

Next up is the fun, flat and long distance slalom Swan Group Speed Challenge across the beautiful lagoon surrounding Ile aux Aigrettes. And finally, the fastest race is the Downwind Zilwa Attitude, which departs from Roches Noire and ends at Zilwa Attitude hotel in Calodyne.

Other events on the programme include the long distance slalom Swan Group Speed Challenge 2/2 in September, which will start at the Nautical Club of Pointe D’Esny and end at Lighthouse Island - the Attitude Blumarine Grand Slam in October, for the champions of the kite and windsurfing, and the Coca Cola Watersport in November, which will also take place at Le Morne.

The overall goal of these events is to highlight Mauritius’ standing as one of the best freeride spots on earth for wind and kitesurfing, with the aim of attracting more than 200 foreign challengers in a few years time and giving the island some valuable worldwide exposure along the way.
