Supperclubs and pop-ups: a taste of Mauritius in London

Selina Periampillai

The ongoing trend for supper clubs and pop-ups shows no sign of abating – hardly a surprise, given that it offers urban city dwellers the chance to sample international cuisines they may be unfamiliar with, minus the need to travel thousands of miles. And for those who’ve already experienced the destination and the taste of Mauritius, it’s a great way to re-live their culinary adventures back home.

Taste of Mauritius

One such London-based venture is run by self-taught cook Selina Periampillai, who specialises in the tempting flavours of Mauritian cuisine, inspired by her Mauritian heritage and the home-cooked recipes of her family.

Selina, otherwise known as Yummy Choo, hosts monthly supperclubs at her home in Croydon, offering an amazing social and cultural alternative to the restaurant scene. Typical dishes might include delectable starters of salt cod fritters or Gateaux Piment (split pea chilli balls), followed by a main course of Fish Vindaye (pickled mustard fish) or Grois Pois (butterbean and potato curry), with flambee pineapple or banana fritters with coconut ice cream for dessert.

As a recognised and respected expert on the Creole cuisine of Mauritius, Selina has contributed recipes and editorial to multiple publications, including the Good Food Guide, Delicious magazine and The London Epicurean, and her business Taste Mauritius also puts on various pop-up events around London in some of the city’s most interesting venues, including Peyton & Byrne’s National Café at the National Gallery and ultra-glamorous dining venue Dstrkt in Piccadilly – a great way for those new to ‘supperclubbing’ to get a taste of what it’s all about.
