Paradis Hotel and Golf Club - golf in mauritius

Despite Mauritius being only the third country in the world to be introduced to golf – the course at the Gymkhana club in Vacoas was one of the earliest outside the UK – it’s only fairly recently that the island has fully lived up to its potential as a golfing destination.

As the price of sugar fell during the latter years of the 20th century, agricultural land became available for resorts to redevelop as golf courses, coinciding with high growth in the tourism sector. Before long, major luxury golf developments began to spring up across the island, with the first at Le Morne’s Paradis Hotel opening in the mid 1990s.

Coming of age

Today, Mauritius is a dream destination for golfers, with nine 18-hole and five 9-hole courses stretching across the east, west and south coasts of the island. The Championship-quality courses have been creatively designed by some of the world’s leading golfers, including Ernie Els and Bernhard Langer, and are genuinely challenging too, with plenty of oceanfront holes, rolling hills, large fairways and naturally incorporated water hazards.

With warm temperatures, low rainfall and gentle breezes, playing conditions are ideal and, of course, the views are out of this world. Little wonder Mauritius was voted the World’s Best Golf Destination for the second consecutive year at the International Tourism Show in March, and no surprise to see an increasing number of events taking place, attracting many big golfing names in the process.
