Enrico est un Italien qui a passé la plus grande partie de sa vie en Afrique du Sud avant de s’installer à Maurice il y a 15 ans. Après avoir dirigé ses propres agences de voyages pendant de nombreuses années, il a finalement décidé de les vendre afin de pouvoir ouvrir Roots. «Je voulais faire quelque chose de différent», dit-il. «J'aime cuisiner et partager le goût de la bonne cuisine avec d'autres personnes.» Et c'est en effet la qualité de ce restaurant italien qui attire les foules: mozzarella, burrata, champignons, pancetta et autres ingrédients italiens essentiels sont importés de la mère patrie et utilisés à la fois dans le menu standard et dans les plats du jour, allant du risotto aux fruits de mer très savoureux à la lasagne traditionnelle.

Private sanctuary

The private al fresco sanctuary certainly inspires lingering. The shady courtyard offers a retreat-like vibe and feels like something of an insider’s secret. Open for breakfast and lunch only, the atmosphere is unhurried and casual, which is exactly the way Enrico likes it. “Being open just for breakfast and lunch allows me to have a good life,” he says. “And that lack of pressure means I can both cook and interact with people too. I love spending time with the regular customers and getting to know them.”

Lighter bites include various pasta dishes, salads, antipasto and panini, or just pop in for a slice of cake or an ice-cream accompanied by a cup of exceptional coffee. Now open for four years, this popular spot is thriving, so next time you’re craving la dolce vita, remember to drop by.
