AfrAsia: This week in Mauritius is about threes.

Specifically, this week is about three tours coming together – the first time that the European Tour, Sunshine Tour and Asian Tour have sanctioned the same tournament.

It is also about twos.

Thomas and Kate Aiken, for example. Husband and wife. And also, this week, golfer and caddie.

Fusion

For Aiken, 31 from Johannesburg, the tri-sanctioning fits his career profile perfectly because he has claimed win on the European Tour (Open de Espana 2011), the Asian Tour (Avantha Masters 2013) and the Sunshine Tour (Africa Open 2014). The latter two wins were in co-sanctioned events.

It would therefore be quite apt if this fusion golfer were to complete the job with victory in the first tri-sanctioned meeting of the Tours.

The omens are good because the only other time Kate carried his bag was just over 12 months ago – for that win in the Africa Open.

“We're one for one,” laughed Aiken after his second round, five-under-par 66 hauled him into contention. “Perhaps we can make it two for two!”

“Mauritius is a great holiday destination,” he added. “And a great golf destination too, so it's been a great decision to come here and it's about time that the three tours got together in one week.”

Paradise

Aiken should know all about paradise islands. He and Kate travelled nearly three days to get here from their home in the Bahamas.

“I love it here. We just slip over the road to the hotel after the golf and spend some time on the beach,” smiled Aiken. “It's a great spot, and wonderful for couples. If you like golf you hit the fairways, if the you prefer the beach head there instead.”

Or maybe: both hit the fairways, one playing, the other carrying the bag.

Aiken laughed again. “We're heading back to the beach now. It's a system that has worked so far!”
