Air Mauritius strengthens Asia-Africa opportunities for travellers

Air Mauritius is expanding its network of air links between Africa and Asia using Mauritius and Singapore as hubs. The bold move reflects the airline’s aims to generate more traffic in order to increase tourism and business between the two continents.

Air Mauritius take off

The first flight on the new “Air Corridor” was operated between Mauritius and Singapore on 11 March 2016 and the official inaugural flight departed from Mauritius on 14 March 2016. One of the key ingredients of the Air Corridor is a collaboration agreement signed between Air Mauritius and the Changi Airport Group (CAG).

The Air Corridor uses the Mauritius-Singapore trunk route connecting the two hubs which are themselves linked to feeder routes from Africa/Southwest Indian Ocean region on the Mauritius side, and the Asian region on the Singapore side.

Air Mauritius is initially operating three weekly flights on the trunk route, where passengers from Asia, for example, can connect seamlessly to a number of destinations in Africa. Air Mauritius’s agreements with partner airlines mean that it can offer two-way connections to 18 cities in 10 countries from Changi airport: China (Shanghai), Hong Kong, Australia (Perth and Sydney), Indonesia (Jakarta, Denpasar, Medan and Pekanbaru), Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu), Thailand (Bangkok, Phuket and Samul), South Korea (Seoul), Philippines (Manila), Cambodia (Phnom Penh) and Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh).

The new Air Corridor offers a big opportunity to strengthen ties between Africa and Asia with Mauritius acting as a natural gateway to Asia and Singapore to the rest of Asia. The 4-Star Skytrax rated Air Mauritius will also add two additional African destinations to its network in May 2016: Dar-Es-Salaam (Tanzania) and Maputo (Mozambique). This will enhance Mauritius’s position as a “twin destination” - for travellers looking for some sun and relaxation in Mauritius, for example, before experiencing a safari in Africa.
