Le Morne: a stunning World Heritage Site

The Le Morne peninsula at the extreme southwestern point of Mauritius is dominated by the enormous, steep-sided basalt mountain of Le Morne Brabant, whose flat summit plateau rises some 556 metres above sea level.

The imposing monolith, with its many caves and rocky overhangs, was inscribed as the World Heritage Site of Le Morne Cultural Landscape in 2008 for its importance as a former shelter of runaway slaves and a symbol of resistance to slavery.

Nowadays, surrounded by an opalescent lagoon and a long stretch of beautiful beachfront, the peninsula is equally well-known as an excellent wind- and kite-surfing destination, sheltered from the trade winds and flanked by a string of luxury hotels set amongst tropical gardens.

Add to this its lush vegetation and mild microclimate, and it’s no surprise this idyllic setting is one of the most sought-after spots on the island.
