Golf-1

With its lush scenery, great weather and luxe accommodations, Mauritius is a golfer's dream vacation. Here are our picks.

Mauritius is a fabulous destination with luxury hotels, pristine beaches, abundant marine life, perfect weather and fantastic golf courses. Avid golfers know that the country has a strong golfing tradition. The Gymkhana Golf Course was the first built in the southern hemisphere in 1902. Mauritius is also the first destination to have organised the first and only worldwide tri-sanction tournament endorsed by the European, Sunshine and Asian Tours.

Just recently, the country was honoured as the Golf Destination of the Year for Africa, Indian Ocean and the Gulf States at the prestigious IAGTO awards held in Slovenia in October 2018.

Today, the country is a golfing destination with award-winning courses designed by top golfers and architects such as Gary Player, Peter Matkovich, Rodney Wright, Bernhard Langer and Ernie Els.

Ile aux Cerfs Golf Club

Voted number one must-play golf course by Golf Magazine, this course is a golfer’s dream! It was designed by the famous Bernhard Langer, who conceived of the course to be accessible to players of all levels. The course covers 38 ha, with the holes meandering up and down the length of the island. All 18 holes have views of the ocean, some through clearings in the trees and others coming close to shore. Langer designed the course with water as an essential feature — the course has nine lakes in all, with three of the holes requiring tee shots across sea inlets to the fairways, which will surely whet the appetite of golfers up for a challenge.

Four Seasons Golf Club Mauritius at Anahita

This course is stunningly set in a tropical sanctuary, with a backdrop of lush mountains and fringed by a vast crystal-clear lagoon. A world-class course designed by golfer Ernie Els, this 18-hole, par-72 championship course with large fairways and five sets of tees is the first of its kind in Mauritius and is home to the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open 2018. Six oceanfront holes end in a final shot considered the most spectacular in the world.

Tamarina Golf Club

Perched on a cliff overhanging Tamarin Bay, this championship 18-hole par-72 course is designed by architect Rodney Wright. The course combines technical challenges with sweeping views of the stunning Rempart Mountain and Tamarin Bay. The club includes a practice area, changing rooms with lockers and showers as well as an academy that offers the services of a PGA pro to help you perfect that swing.

Avalon Golf Estate

Set on the slopes of a dormant volcano, this 18-hole golf course is considered by some as the best golf course in Mauritius. One of the reasons perhaps is its hole 4, where you tee off from an elevated ridgeline, across a ravine to a fairway situated well below the trees. By all accounts, a breathtaking and demanding shot. Designed by Peter Matkovich, the course is characterised by lush fairways, challenging bunkers and the clever use of rivers and ravines as features. The course was designed with the Southeast trade winds in mind. All par 3s and par 5s play in different directions, giving golfers varying conditions of play.

Heritage Golf Club

Twice voted the number one golf course in the Indian Ocean by the World Golf Awards, among others, the course is set between rolling mountains and a beautiful lagoon, offering golfers beautiful views. The 18-hole championship course is also designed by Peter Matkovich and is ideal for all levels of golfers with generous fairways and five different tee options for each hole. Juniors and beginners need not fret, as they can hone their skills at the Par 3 course.

The Links Golf Course

A championship course designed by Rodney Wright and Peter Allis, this 18-hole course is characterised by wide open spaces and rolling terrain. There are water hazards in six holes, some of which are very tough. What’s more, the afternoon sea breezes, while pleasant, may just affect your game if you’re not careful. Excellent fairways and firm greens complement the undulating terrain, which also features volcanic rock structures, piled high, seemingly adding to the challenge of the course itself. Par 72, the 18th hole is the signature hole along turquoise waters. Longest put is located at the 10th hole with a distance of 566 yards.

The Legend Golf Course

This course was designed by South African champion, Hugh Baiocchi, and is considered the crown jewel of the resort, located along one of the most beautiful beaches on the island.
The Legend opened in 1994, and it was this course that cemented Mauritius’ reputation as a world-class golfing destination. What’s so distinctive about this course? Each of the 18 holes is unique, while fairways are set in the heart of an indigenous forest, which provides distraction and challenge for any avid golfer. The course culminates in velvet green, made to US PGA regulations, of course.

Golf-5

Another thing that cements its reputation as a, well, legendary course is that it is home to the famous Johnnie Walker Classic and the Mauritius Open, which has been won by champion golfers Rodger Davis, Michael McLean, Philip Golding, Jonathan Lomas and Scotland’s Gordon Sherry. Since 2009, the course also hosts the European Senior Tour.

GOLFING MAURITIUS PASS

Avid golfing holidaymakers to Mauritius may now avail of the new Golfing Mauritius Pass, which enables them to enjoy a minimum of two rounds at all of Mauritius’ nine championship 18-hole golf courses at reduced green fees! The new initiative is a collaboration between the island’s Tourism Office and the Mauritius Golf Tourism Association. Keen golfers who want to apply for the pass can do so online at mauritiusgolftourism.com or through a tour operator or travel agency. The pass is available year-round.
