Looking out for the dolphins in Mauritius

We spotted a lovely short video over on CNN Going Green about protecting and preserving the dolphin population off the coast of Mauritius.

The idea is, says CNN, ‘to protect marine mammals from tourist activity and track dolphins in the region.’

‘The most important thing is, I think, to educate people’, says Shakti Teker, Mauritius Marine Conservation Society Project Officer, who narrates the video.

Her job involves going out on a boat three times a week ‘when the weather is good’ to monitor the dolphins – tracking the population, watching out for them as individuals, and checking their behaviour patterns and seeming wellbeing.

The goal is to help the local and tourist population live in harmony with the sea mammals, not harm or interfere detrimentally with them.

‘It’s time to care’, says Shakti Teker.
