Mahebourg is ‘a beautiful town’ in ‘the south-east corner of Mauritius’, says Femina – and great for boating and snorkeling. National swimming champion and ‘local legend’ Jean-Claude Farla offers reasonable-priced trips on a traditional 22ft pirogue.

And finally, of course, eat. The piece recommends Domaine, Palais de Barbizon and Port Louis Central Market for fabulous food at excellent prices. We couldn’t agree more.
