The great spectacle of Mauritius's 50th Independence Day

Celebrations for the 50th anniversary of independence for Mauritius went spectacularly by all accounts.

Culminating in a main event at Champs de Mars, where ‘a stunning aviation display, carnival style concert, parade, and a spectacular audiovisual and fireworks show… lit up the night sky’, reported Traveller 24.

It also described this as ‘probably the largest pyrotechnics display in Mauritius’ history’.

Flags flew across the island, and the seasonal rains, that fell on Sunday, held off for the main event on Monday night. Mauritius 50th Independence Day celebrations

World Cup atmosphere

And the celebrations were attended as well by ‘chief guest’, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, says Financial Express, which also quotes Mauritian Tourism Minister Anil Kumarsingh Gayan.

Rainbow nation

He spoke of tourism between the two, and of more flights we are scheduling from Mumbai to Mauritius.

And Mauritius Prime Minister, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, celebrated the island as ‘a rainbow nation’, according to this account on IOL.

Everything came together in Monday night’s celebrations.

‘Helicopters and planes did amazing aerial displays over the venue, which is the oldest racecourse in the Southern Hemisphere’, said Traveller 24.

And the island’s whole 400-year history was commemorated in the amazing audiovisual show.

It was quite a week. Quite a night. One to remember.
