If you’re travelling to Mauritius this month, chances are high that romance is on the agenda. Fortunately for you, Mauritius is one of the most romantic places on earth, and you’ll no doubt feel the love just by being here.

Nevertheless, for those in search of love inspiring vistas, we’ve put together a guide to our favourite romantic spots in and around the island.

Riambel Beach

We’ve written about Riambel before, in our previous feature on the south coast’s best beaches, but did you know that you can indulge in one of the most romantic activities in all of Mauritius is possible here? Come to Riambel in the late afternoon and you can enjoy this stunning location on horseback, with a sunset ride along the beach courtesy of the Centre Equestre de Riambel. Few experiences are as romantic as riding side by side with the wind in your hair, as the sun goes down on another perfect day.

Cap Malheureux

Though the name translates as ‘Cape Misfortune’ due to a history of shipwrecks, there’s nothing unfortunate about this stunning spot on the island’s northernmost tip. Famed for its picturesque little church – the red-roofed Notre Dame Auxiliatrice – the tiny fishing village just north of Grand Baie is the perfect place for a secluded stroll or a picnic for two, with magnificent views over the offshore islands of Coin de Mire, Ile Plate and Ile Ronde.

Ile aux Aigrettes

If you like your romance with a slice of wilderness, take a jaunt to the paradisaical Ile aux Aigrettes, an enchanting coral island in the south east of Mauritius. Managed by the Mauritius Wildlife Foundation, the island is a nature reserve and one of the best places in the country to spot the rare pink pigeon and the giant Aldabra tortoise. Marked trails through dense coastal Ebony forests lead to observation points with panoramic views of Mahébourg Bay and the ocean.

Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden – to give it its official name – is the oldest botanical garden in the southern hemisphere and one of the most highly reputed in the world. The magical 37 hectare space offers ample opportunity for loved-up couples to get lost amongst the 650+ species of plants, including baobab trees, more than 85 species of palm and an abundance of giant Victoria amazonica water lilies. If you want to combine a little knowledge with your romantic wanderings, expert guides can also be hired at the gates.

Ile D’ambre

Lying just off the north east coast between Grand Gaube and Poudre d’Or is Ile D’ambre or Amber Island, a tranquil 100 hectare islet inside the lagoon whose mangrove-forested coastline is ripe for peaceful exploration by two-person kayak. Glide silently in and out of the shady inlets, keeping an eye out for endemic butterflies, and stop for a lazy sunbathe and snorkel in relative solitude at the tiny neighbouring islet of Bernache.
