How Mauritian rum is taking over the world

CNN has produced an article on how Mauritius is well placed to make a major impact on the international drinks market with its unique varieties and flavours of rum.

Rum in Mauritius

“Mauritius is a relative newcomer to global rum markets,” says CNN but goes on to say its geography, terrain and local characteristics make it an ideal location to produce high-quality rum.

Twelve kinds of sugar cane grow in Mauritius, but two are used for rum -- yellow and red. The color refers to the stalk, only visible once the green leaves are stripped away. The flavors are similar, but they're the varieties best suited to the hilly land at Chamarel.”

Mauritian rum also benefits from the different ways the batches can be infused. CNN says: “The rum bottles most visible around Mauritius are infused varieties, which use the island's abundant local crops in spices and coffee.”
