Mauritius could be your perfect honeymoon choice – argues this useful piece over in Brides, which draws a direct comparison between the island’s charms and those of the Maldives.

Makes for an interesting contrast. The Maldives it explains is desert-island heaven, but after a few days some might feel a bit restless.

Not so on Mauritius, says the piece.

‘Whereas the Maldives are a scattering of flat, desert islands, Mauritius is a complex, adventurous landscape. Every inch of available space on Mauritius is covered with rolling fields of sugarcane – the air is sweet with the smell of it, and as wind moves through the sugarcane fields they seem to almost wave to you in welcome. If ever there was a tropical island to be called “paradise,” this is it.’

It goes on to extol the island’s virtues: masses to explore, and do, as well as luxury places to stay. Not least, it recommends, the s One & Only Le Saint Géran. ‘This grande dame of a hotel has been a standard bearer in tropical luxury since 1975, and just emerged from a multimillion-dollar renovation,’ says Brides.  

As for ways to spend your days if you tire of the beach, it offers ‘elusive pink pigeon’ spotting on Île aux Aigrettes, hiking in the Nicolière Reserve or Black River Peak Park, or of course a day out exploring Port Louis. ‘You will not run out of things to see here.’

Beyond all that, ‘the most special part of Mauritius – beyond the luxury resorts, beyond the exotic landscape – is its people’, says Brides.

‘The island’s population is incredibly diverse’, it concludes, conjuring an image that’s ‘not uncommon’ of ‘an Indian woman and a Chinese woman carrying on a conversation in half English and half French’.

‘It’s a level of diversity and acceptance which exists almost nowhere else on the planet these days, and one that makes traveling Mauritius feel refreshing and exciting.’
