Mauritius from the air

There’s something special about tropical islands: long days of endless warm weather; rare species of flora and fauna often found nowhere else on earth; white sandy beaches interrupted by hidden coves and mangrove forests, all ringed by exquisite lagoons and offshore islets. But it’s sometimes hard to take it all in from ground level, so today’s gallery offers a taste of Mauritius from the air.

Undoubtedly, one of the best ways to get a feel for the topography, scale, tropical colours, and both the coastline and interior of Mauritius is from an Air Mauritius helicopter tour, as demonstrated by these dramatic shots from recent passenger Andy Durant, who enjoyed some stunning views of the turquoise waters around Ile aux Benitiers, in the shadow of Le Morne Brabant.

On the east coast, the luxury Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita is quite something to behold from the air, with landscaped gardens, an Ernie Els-designed golf course, and its own 11-acre private island surrounded by sapphire seas and various emerald mangrove islets.

The sweeping curves of the beach at LUX* Grand Gaube is another sight best appreciated from the sky, from where the views stretch far into the distance to incorporate the northern islands of Ile Ronde and Ile aux Serpents.

The long coastline and stark outline of Le Morne Brabant mountain was expertly captured by drone in this view of sister property LUX* Le Morne by Instagrammer @unclescrooch.

And finally, the perfectly manicured greens and water features of the Heritage Golf Club look dazzling in this aerial image, with the winding coast road and swirling lagoon in the distance.
