Meet the artist: Gilberte Marimootoo Natchoo

Gilbert Marimooto exhibition - Angsana

Self-taught Mauritian artist Gilberte Marimootoo Natchoo, 58, didn’t begin her artistic career until 1997. But within just a few years her work could be found in galleries throughout the country, from her first showing at Rose Hill’s Max Boullé Gallery in 1999 to collective and solo exhibitions at dozens of venues and galleries across the island, including the National Art Gallery of Mauritius.

Natchoo’s artworks are heavily inspired by organic shapes and the natural world: some of her favourite subjects include marine life, women’s bodies and landscapes, and her paintings – both figurative and abstract – are a colourful expression of the subtlety she finds in these themes.

As someone who never studied drawing, she initially veered towards the abstract in order to express herself through a world of shapes and colours. After starting with brushes, Natchoo began to paint with her hands and fingers, but found this technique required equal amounts of skill and precision as any other. But ultimately, she

Gilberte Marimootoo Natchooknew that more than anything else an artist is connected to their work via the imagination, and that the secret to creating great work lay only in practice.

Exhibition and art therapy at Angsana Balaclava

On March 14, Angsana Balaclava Mauritius will be featuring her work during an art exhibition as part of their ongoing work to raise awareness of local artists. Along with the painting exhibition, Gilberte Marimootoo Natchoo will be hosting art therapy classes where participants will learn to draw with their bare hands.

The classes are available on Wednesdays from 19 March 192014. Further information is available from the hotel.

Natchoo exhibits and sells her paintings at Caudan Craft Market in Port Louis. She contributes to different organisations related to the care and welfare of children, and is a member of the Mauritius chapter of the Arterial Network.
