The Mauritius Marathon returns

mauritius marathon

At precisely 6.30am on the 20th July, a crowd of carbed-up runners begun one of the island’s most gruelling physical challenges – the annual Mauritius Marathon.

The 42.195km journey from Le Morne Brabant to Saint Felix beach sees the runners follow a spectacular route along the coastal road, past fishermen, surfers and kiteboarders. Unmissable views include Le Morne mountain and the turquoise lagoon, the island of Sanchot in the beautiful bay of Jacotet, and the wild green beaches of the south coast.

Even if you’re not taking part, the atmosphere is not to be missed. The outstanding course attracts spectators along its entire length, especially in the villages en route. Locals, visitors and volunteers all take to the roadside to offer support and encouragement, cheering the runners onwards toward the finishing line. On the return leg, the route passes inland, along the left hand side of Le Morne Brabant – home to a rich history and many legends – before the final sprint to Saint Felix beach where it’s time for a well-deserved dip in the lagoon.

A half-marathon and 10km race was also held on the same day.
