Wine tasting in Mauritius hotels

Mauritius may not immediately spring to mind as a wine-tasting destination, but many of the island’s luxury resorts are home to extensive wine collections and expert sommeliers, who’ll be more than happy to help you pick the perfect vintage. We take a look at four of the best hotel cellars in Mauritius, all of which offer wine tasting opportunities for guests.

Another resort with an extraordinary wine collection is Constance Le Prince Maurice, whose 175 square metre cellar is stocked with exclusive wines from around the world. The room – which has capacity for 15,000 bottles – adjoins the Archipel restaurant, and offers a dedicated table for wine tasting upon request. The intimate sessions are available for a maximum of 6 guests, who can also indulge in a selection of cheeses and other deli favourites while learning about the hotel’s various vintages or enjoying the impressive Sabrage.

The Oberoi

Tucked into Turtle Bay on the island’s sunset-friendly west coast, the Oberoi lies on a 600 metre beachfront within 20 acres of sub-tropical gardens. Fully tapping into the trend for offering experiential travel, the hotel’s own ‘Touching the Senses’ programme features a number of unique classes and events, including a complimentary wine-tasting session in the restored Gunpowder Room. Described as ‘a real invitation to start recognising and distinguishing a wine’s characteristics’, the class offers guests the chance to sample the full depth and range of the hotel’s superlative cellar.

One&Only Le Saint Géran

one and only

Lying peacefully on its own east coast peninsula, One&Only Le Saint Géran is as renowned for its fine dining restaurants and skilled sommeliers as it is for the pristine surroundings in which it sits. With a selection of more than 240 vintages from France and wider Europe to Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and over to California, Argentina and Chile, the collection will thrill experienced connoisseurs as much as enthusiastic amateurs. Let the experts help you pair the perfect wine with your food, or book your own special wine and canapé tasting in the hotel’s kitchen with the expert guidance of a sommelier and chef.

Outrigger Mauritius Resort & Spa

Opened earlier this year to much acclaim, the new Outrigger Mauritius Resort & Spa in Bel Ombre is not short on eating and drinking options, with Bar Bleu for the cocktail connoisseur and Willie’s Rum and Crab Shack for the rum aficionado to name but two. But the hotel is also home to a beautiful wine cellar, known as Rouben’s Wine Room, which showcases a broad spectrum of wines from across the globe. Adjacent to the arch-ceilinged Mercado restaurant, Rouben’s can be reserved for exclusive wine tasting sessions, or alternatively can be booked for private dinners and other special occasions.
