New for 2014: Beachcomber Paddle Week

Stand-up paddleboarding is fast becoming one of the world’s most popular watersports, with a host of associated health and fitness benefits. The phenomenon originated in Hawaii as a teaching method and an alternative to surfing on days when the Pacific Ocean waves weren’t quite up to scratch. Now the activity has become a sport in its own right, allowing participants of all abilities to glide smoothly along lakes, rivers and sea coasts, and even ride breaking waves if the right conditions exist.

Stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, provides a complete and powerful overall workout for the body, helping to maintain strong balance and core muscle strength.

Right at the forefront of this trend, Beachcomber Hotels have been offering stand-up paddleboarding lessons for some time. But now they’ve taken it one step further, with the first international inflatable board competition known as Beachcomber Paddle Week, which runs from 9-14 November 2014 at Shandrani Resort & Spa, a luxury hotel on the south east coast with five restaurants, Spa by Clarins, 9-hole gof course and Kids Club.

Mauritius is an ideal SUP destination, with a watery world of mangrove forests, irridescent lagoons, tropical rivers and stunning sea coast to explore. Combine this with near-perfect conditions and an average temperature of 28°C and it’s easy to see why the event is destined to be a success.

The inaugural Beachcomber Paddle Week is all about pushing yourself just that little bit farther in an atmosphere of friendly competition and guidance. SUP professionals will be on hand to provide some expert advice, and entrants will be provided with everything they need for an exeptional paddleboarding adventure.

Races will be split into two categories, Elite and Recreational, for both men and women, who will compete on inflatable boards with a maximum length of 12.6 feet. Younger entrants will also be encouraged to take part, with the Beachcomber Kids division having its own separate medals table. The comprehensive race programme contains plenty of challenges, from a Long Distance Race for those looking to prove their stamina, to the more speed-based Spring Race. The Paddle Week will also culminate in a more exotic happening – a sultry outing under the (hopefully) clear night sky, with the world premiere of the Full Moon race.
