Specific rules and information ON Special baggage

At Air Mauritius, we want to give you the freedom to travel your way as far as possible. You can carry items that need to be handled with extra care or caution as long as you take into account our recommendations regarding such special baggage.

Special baggage

Ship models will be accepted as checked baggage for a fee. The dimensions (length + width + height) must not exceed 158 cm.

We recommend that you avoid packing fragile, valuable and perishable items in your checked baggage.  

Air Mauritius cannot accept any liability whatsoever for damage to articles which are not permitted to be transported in checked baggage, including fragile or perishable items, items having a special value, such as money, jewellery, precious metals, computers, personal electronic devices, negotiable papers, securities, or other valuables, business documents, passports and other identification documents or samples.  

Hence, Air Mauritius advises you to contract additional third-party insurance for such items.

If you need to carry medication, we advise that you pack it in your hand baggage and carry with you the corresponding medical prescriptions (which may be requested from you by security or customs officials). For medication in LAG (liquids, aerosols, and gels) form, you will need to comply with the restrictions on LAGs.

The following measures apply for carriage of frozen food on board our ATR aircraft operating on the Rodrigues route. Frozen food should be packed in one of the following ways for it to be accepted as checked luggage: 

  • In plastic bags enclosed in a hermetically sealed cooler box.
  • In sealed plastic bags packed in a polystyrene box. You should then have the entire unit wrapped in plastic by the wrapping service at the Rodrigues Plaine Corail Airport.
  • In sealed plastic bags wrapped in paper (to absorb moisture) and packed in a carton box. You should then have the entire unit wrapped in plastic by the wrapping service at the Rodrigues Plaine Corail Airport.

Additional measures:

  • The maximum weight of a product per package/box must not exceed 5 kg.
  • The use of ice or dry ice in the packages during air transportation is prohibited.
  • The airport staff of Air Mauritius and the officers of the Airport of Rodrigues will check the packages and ensure their satisfactory condition before they are accepted at check-in counters.

Due to the risk of travellers importing disease into a country, we recommend that you check the requirements with local country regulations prior to your travel. For instance, to bring meat, meat products or milk products in the EU, you need to comply with the EU Regulations. 

Failure to comply with regulations may result in a fine or criminal prosecution.

Transporting the remains of a loved one? We are sorry for your loss and would like to help you carry back these precious remains without any delay. 

For bringing in urns to Mauritius, please provide the following documents so we can proceed with all due haste:

  • Death certificate, stating cause of death
  • Copy of passport/ID
  • Cremation certificate
  • Certificate from the undertaker confirming that the urn is hermetically sealed.

For transporting urns from Mauritius to other countries, please check the local regulations of the country you intend to travel to.
