Bring your beloved pet along for the adventure

We're committed to ensuring a safe and comfortable journey for both you and your pet. Our pet-friendly policies are designed to make travelling with animals as stress-free as possible.

Even though your pet can't fly in the cabin with you,  it can still travel safely and comfortably on the same flight as you, in the hold of most of our aircraft.

Acceptance of your pets on board Air Mauritius flights is strictly as per the latest edition of the IATA Live Animals Regulations Manual.

Special conditions may apply for the carriage of certain categories of animals, for example bulldogs, bull terriers, burmese cats, etc.

Prior to travel, you will have to ensure that your pet is in good health, vaccination certificates are up to date and all relevant permits (export/import/transit) are in order.

Pets travelling as checked baggage

With prior reservation and necessary documentation, your pets can travel comfortably from Mauritius as checked baggage. This also depends on the local regulations of the country you intend to visit. Passengers who intend to travel with a pet as checked baggage must notify Air Mauritius at the time of booking their flight.

Important : Domestic animals of unusual sizes, reptiles and rodents must be transported as cargo only.

Pets travelling as cargo

For solo pet travel, we handle a variety of animals with safety. Shipping costs are based on the combined weight of the pet, container, and food in the aircraft hold. The shipper has to ensure that cages and number of pets per cage meet IATA standards. Consult your Cargo agent for guidance.

Please contact our Air Mauritius Cargo Office or liaise with your freight forwarder who will provide you with valuable guidelines on how to prepare your pets for travel, assist with the relevant formalities and book space with Air Mauritius.

Prior to your travel, you must ensure that your pet is in good health, vaccination certificates are up to date and all relevant permits (export/import/transit) are in order. In general, when travelling with pets, passengers must bring along originals and photocopies of all documents including :

  • Export/import/transshipment permits or licenses from your departure/destination/transit country's relevant authorities.

  • Valid health and rabies vaccination certificates.

  • Any additional documents that may be required by your departure/destination/transit country's authorities.

For more details regarding the required permits, we request you to contact the Livestock and Veterinary Services Division of the concerned Ministry.

In the event, your pet is in transit in Mauritius with long/overnight connection – we can make special arrangements, against a fee, for a service provider to attend to your pet for it to be fed and have a walk around.

For your pet to travel hassle-free, please do take note that all animals, upon landing in any country/region, may be examined by government veterinary officials. Keep in mind that veterinary inspection fees may be charged.

Local veterinary health certificates obtained from animal clinics are not sufficient to clear government veterinary inspections, and make sure that vaccination certificates are up to date and all relevant permits (export/import/transit) are in order . To obtain these documents, such as government approved health certificates, please contact the local authorities of the country to which you are travelling.

The import of any live animal into Mauritius is regulated under the Animal Disease Act 1925, and as such, an import permit will need to be obtained from the Livestock and Veterinary Division of the Ministry of Agro Industry and Food Security (t: +230 454 1016, e: [email protected]). Your pet will be quarantined on arrival for a duration of 5 days, which could be extended to 30 days depending on the country of origin. You should also provide the authorities with the details of the person who will pick up the live animal from the quarantine centre at Réduit, Mauritius. Quarantine charges will apply.
