Bring the whole family on board!

Travelling with infants and children can be both exciting and challenging. From check-in to touchdown, here's everything you need to know when flying with your little adventurers.

Infants are those under 2 years of age while our young flyers are those who lie between the age of 2 and less than 12 years on the date of travel.

Preparing for your flight

For their safety, infants may travel only after the first week of birth, at which point no medical clearance is required.

Travel Documents

Make sure you have all the necessary travel documents for your children, such as passports, visas, and any required medical certificates.

On board with infants

The younger infant will be accommodated in line with usual practice in the baby cot placed in front of your seat. We request you to inform us while booking your flight or to contact us for more information, so we can prepare for your comfort and that of your infants in advance.

Baggage for young travellers

Young Flyers enjoy the same luggage allowance as our adult guests. When flying with an infant you can check in an extra piece of luggage of up to 23 kg (this does not apply to our Rodrigues route where the extra luggage for infants is up to 5 kg).

When travelling with infants or children, you can bring cots, prams, or buggies until the boarding gate, where we will store them safely in the aircraft hold.

Check your Baggage allowance.

Sit together

You can choose seats in advance to ensure your family sits together. We are pleased to offer free seating for families travelling with infants or children, all booked in the same reservation. Select seats that are more convenient for you, whether it's closer to the bathroom or with extra legroom. For safety reasons, children are not seated in emergency exit rows.

If you booked a seat for your child, you may also bring an inflight bed/ leg-rest extension such as a Bed-Box, Fly Tot, 1st Class Kid Travel Pillow or Plane Pal, among others.

For more details, check our Special Conditions for inflight bed & leg-rest extensions section below.

Pre-book special meals for the special little ones

We cater for special meals for babies and children. Check our Special meals page for more information.  Select the meal that suits your child’s taste at the time of booking or at least 24 hours before the flight.

Discover more

For your infant's comfort, there are cots available on all Air Mauritius international flights. The number of cots available on the aircraft is limited, therefore, please make a request at the time of booking and we will confirm your request at the time of your check in, as far as possible.

Our baby cots can accommodate infants up to 12 months old and/or weighing up to 11 kg, and up to 74 cm tall. Since the baby cots need to be stowed at take-off and landing, we’ll give you a special seat belt extension to carry your infant safely in your lap at such times. Further, we request you to remove your infant from the baby cot for safety reasons whenever the seat belt sign is switched on, especially in case of turbulence.

You are welcome to use in-flight bed and leg-rest extensions* for your child, as long as they are not attached directly to the seat. Some devices, like Fly LegsUp or FlyeBaby, are not allowed for safety reasons.

Please follow our recommendations:

  • Ensure your child's head points toward the tail of the aircraft for secure seat belt usage.

  • Use window seats for child care accessories and avoid emergency exit rows, aisle seats, or middle seats.

  • Safely stow your device during taxi, take-off, and landing in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front, as instructed by the crew.

  • For the comfort of fellow passengers, keep your device from stopping any seat from reclining or taking up more than one seat.

  • Children under 2 years of age must be removed from the inflight bed / leg-rest and secured with an infant seat belt when the seat belt sign is on.

You can use Child Restraint Devices (CRD), including car seats and upper torso supports on flights operated by Air Mauritius. Please inform us of your intention to use a CRD when booking or contact us for more information. Conditions apply.

It is important to ensure your CRD meets specific safety standards.

Note: This facility is not available on our domestic flights to Rodrigues, short-haul flights to Reunion or in Business cabins across Air Mauritius flights. For codeshare flights operated by partner airlines, acceptance will be in accordance with the partner airlines’ rules. For medical or reduced mobility cases requiring special seats, we request you to contact our reservations agents.

Please follow our recommendations:

  • If you have reserved a seat for your infant, a car seat or upper torso harness is mandatory.

  • For the safety and comfort of your child, the CRD should be marked/ labelled as certified for use on an aircraft by a National Aviation Authority and/or meet any of the following standards:

1. European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) ETSO-C100b

2. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) TSO-C100, TSO-C100a, TSO-C100b, or TSO-C100c

3. European Safety Standard requirements of ECE Regulation 44

4. United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard FMVSS 213

5.Australia/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS) 1754

  • The car seat must have a maximum external seat width of 17 inches / 43 cm, on European flights, and 16 inches / 40.6 cm, on other routes.

  • Child harnesses are suitable for children aged 1 year and older who weigh between 22 and 44 pounds / 10 and 20 kg, and are up to 40 inches / 100 cm tall.

  • Please ensure that your child’s weight and height are in conformity with the manufacturer’s specifications and that the car seat is installed strictly as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Please ensure that the CRD is in good functioning condition.

  • We will allocate a window seat for your child's CRD.
  • We will provide a form of indemnity at check-in for your signature.
  • If your CRD does not meet safety standards and certifications, we may need to check it in as luggage. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause.
