If you’re in Mauritius for one of its festivals then Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is an incredible event to experience, this year taking place on 30^th October.

Buildings, gardens and homes are adorned with candles, electric lights and clay lamps and fireworks light up the sky and dazzle onlookers to ward off evil spirits.

This is a public holiday in Mauritius and many Hindu homes will be cleaned, opening the way to the deity, good vibes and celebrations. Colourful, bright designs called ‘rangoli’ are created to celebrate the triumph of good over evil, purity over impurity, and light over darkness. This is one of the most important Hindu festivals.

Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama, who was the seventh incarnation of Vishnu, from a 14-year exile. It is a festival for rejoicing and renewal when friends and family exchange gifts and sweets.

Diwali holds significance not only in Hinduism but also in Sikhism, known as Bandi Chhor Divas. The Jains celebrate it as the day when Lord Mahaveer, the last trithankara, attained Nirvana or Moksha.
