Clarification on Flight MK 209 of 2 October 2025
In line with operational procedures, flight MK 209 had to perform a go-around manoeuvre during the final approach phase. The ATR series, being a high-wing turboprop aircraft with a relatively low fuselage, is fitted with a tail skid — a bumper designed to protect the aircraft structure in the event of what is commonly referred to as a “tail-strike.”
During the go-around on that day, a minor “tail-strike” did in fact occur.
The aircraft was inspected by engineers and maintenance personnel, who noted light scratches on the tail skid. These were found to be within the allowable limits as defined in the Aircraft Maintenance Manual (AMM). As no structural damage was observed, the aircraft was returned to service the following day after inspection and validation. The aircraft has since been operating its scheduled rotations safely and without any issues.
Such events occasionally occur with this type of aircraft, and the ATR is specifically equipped with a tail skid by the manufacturer in anticipation of such situations.
Internal company procedures are strictly followed, and Air Mauritius reassures its passengers that it makes no compromise when it comes to safety.
