As an island nation, Mauritians feel a deep sense of attachment to the ocean and, by extension, the boats and ships who ply its waters. We’re written previously about how fibreglass boats are gradually replacing the beautiful wooden pirogues, but for now at least, some do remain.

During the St Michel regatta – an event celebrating the local Saint Michel church which this year turned 100 years old – the hotel Veranda Paul & Virginie in Grande Gaube sponsored a traditional pirogue with brightly coloured sails. The simple wooden boat finished second in this annual event, which can be viewed from the grounds of the resort.

Guests of Zilwa Attitude are invited to share the life of a local fisherman at dawn. At 5.48am, it’s time to hop on a colourful pirogue to watch the sunrise in the lagoon: a once in a lifetime and genuine experience. With either a sail or a motor, these boats are still used by numerous fishermen and are a major tool for the coastal community. The trip is an ideal way for visitors to get under the skin of the Mauritian way of life.

Many of the island’s hotels have their own boats and sailing crafts.
