The boats and yachts of Mauritius

As an island nation, Mauritians feel a deep sense of attachment to the ocean and, by extension, the boats and ships who ply its waters. We’re written previously about how fibreglass boats are gradually replacing the beautiful wooden pirogues, but for now at least, some do remain.

During the St Michel regatta – an event celebrating the local Saint Michel church which this year turned 100 years old – the hotel Veranda Paul & Virginie in Grande Gaube sponsored a traditional pirogue with brightly coloured sails. The simple wooden boat finished second in this annual event, which can be viewed from the grounds of the resort.

Guests of Zilwa Attitude are invited to share the life of a local fisherman at dawn. At 5.48am, it’s time to hop on a colourful pirogue to watch the sunrise in the lagoon: a once in a lifetime and genuine experience. With either a sail or a motor, these boats are still used by numerous fishermen and are a major tool for the coastal community. The trip is an ideal way for visitors to get under the skin of the Mauritian way of life.

Many of the island’s hotels have their own boats and sailing crafts. Beachcomber’s Royal Palm resort is home to the Royal Princess luxury yacht, a crewed vessel designed to deliver excellent, all-round performance while offering comfortable living and a classic elegance on deck. Trips are available to the northern islands, and guests may also take an overnight outing or a sundowner cruise. The 20 metre boat can accommodate up to 10 people during the day, or six people overnight in its three en suite cabins. Beachcomber’s Shandrani resort also has its own craft – a speedboat ideal for a wide range of water sports, as well as trips to the Blue Bay marine park and excursions along the wider south east coast of Mauritius.

Similarly, Angsana Balaclava has its own catamaran and a glass bottom boat, along with a host of kayaks, laser boats and pedal boats.
